BySANDOZ, Calif. (CNN) - A pharmaceutical giant is trying to market a generic version of Viagra, a popular erectile dysfunction drug used to treat male sexual dysfunction.
The erectile dysfunction drug Levitra is a prescription drug that was approved by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration in May, but only had the name Cialis.
The company said it has received multiple requests for a generic version of the drug from patients.
It has had trouble getting the Food and Drug Administration to approve the generic version of Cialis, but said the agency's decision to approve the generic was based on several factors including the availability of the product, the quality of the product and the regulatory approval process.
"We're not making any changes to the approval process," said Edward M. Smith, president of Smith Pharma. "We're just going to continue to follow the FDA's guidance."
Smith, a former executive at Eli Lilly and Co., said it had received multiple requests for the product from patients who wanted the same drug, and was pleased that it had been approved.
